Easter is in three days! What? How did that happen? Anyone else feeling surprised by this? I don’t know about you but the days seem nameless and I forget about days that are of some kind of significance, such as Easter! So it has snuck up on us.
Honestly? Easter is a favorite celebration around here. The story of hope, restoration and redemption that Easter tells is the foundation of our family. And while this year’s celebration is going to look a little different, hope, restoration and redemption are what we are holding onto now more than ever.
So for Sunday, even though we can’t celebrate with anyone outside of our family of five, the traditions we love will still be sprinkled throughout our day.
First up: the meal!
What is a tradition without food? For me the Easter meal has always included mashed potatoes, corn, and ham steaks with brown sugar and pineapple. Because these strange times have created some voids on the shelves in grocery stores we will be switching things up just a bit. The mashed potatoes will be there and will include butter and sour-cream, the corn will be replaced with brussel sprouts roasted with bacon and the ham steaks will be replaced by a bone-in spiral ham. And because it is just the five of us this year I am going to try a new recipe for the ham which includes brown sugar, bourbon and honey (all of which are already in my cupboards!)
Other traditions that will look a little different will include virtual church and an Easter egg hunt for three kids (and a puppy!) instead of 30+.
I think we can all agree that in these very weird times this Easter it is going to feel, well, weird. But I have a feeling it can also be wonderful! Happy (almost) Easter friends! Hope yours is full of all the traditions and flavors you love.
